LEADING Brisbane-based male designer Jack Sullivan is set to take the New York bridal fashion scene by storm after his label had been received extremely well at the prestigious London bridal shows “White Gallery”.
Jack (31), started his eponymous label eight years ago, but has grown tremendously with 60 stores stocking his designs across Australia, Europe and New Zealand. Sullivan has now firmly set his eyes on the concrete jungle to launch his 2020 collection in October alongside some of the most elite bridal labels in the world; Vera Wang being just one.
After viewing and being apart of the New York Bridal fashion shows last October, Sullivan soaked up the atmosphere and immediately felt his designs were world class and could compete within this offshore market. Sullivan acknowledges to reach great achievement there is also great risk which is a natural course of business. Although expanding in Australia is still a very important part of his strategy, Sullivan believes “in order for the business to grow, it needs to expand overseas.”
After launching his collection in the United Kingdom in 2013, Jack learned an incredible amount about global business practices. He is encouraged by the fact he is holding his own while already competing against the so called “big players” in the bridal scene such as Karen Willis Holmes, Alan Hannah, Carolina Herrera and Pronovias.
However, there are still big challenges to overcome as an Australian designer. Sullivan discloses, “compared to our competitors the cost of running a business in Australia, in addition to the fluctuating dollar, is the toughest battle in the international market”.
Regardless, Sullivan remains optimistic as buyers come to New York to purchase unique gowns for their bridal stores across North and South America. Sullivan’s ultimate goal is to sign stores in all the major cities in the United States and be able to invest in some solid infrastructure to have North America as a self-sustaining business. However, this process took a solid four years in the UK.
New York Bridal Fashion Week has many events showcasing the very best bridal collections from across the globe. The fashion week continues to grow world-wide and creates a convenient and engaging market for professional retailers and manufacturers across the globe. This year Jack will be showing his 2020 collection on a very trendy New York Rooftop at the “One Fine Day Bridal Market” from the 6th-8th of October 2019.
